What makes you happy?

LV= has commissioned research to find out whether experiences or things bring the most happiness to people in the UK

Research found that eight in 10 (82%) people say surrounding themselves with experiences, rather than things, makes them happiest.

Only 8% say purchases bring them the most happiness, although this doubles for 18-24 year-olds (16%).

The survey of more than 2,000 people across the UK also found that the experiences which bring people the most happiness can be split into two categories: spending time with family/friends and going on holidays.

Three-quarters (75%) of people aged 50+ say they get a lot of happiness out of socialising with family/friends and six in 10 (62%) 18-24-year olds say the same.

The research also found:

• Four in ten (41%) people aged 50+ wish they spent more money on experiences, and those aged 25-34 are almost twice as likely to say they wish they'd spent more money on physical items than the 50+ group (17% vs 9%).
• Nearly nine in 10 (86%) people aged 50+ say experiences bring them the most happiness, compared to just 6% who say purchases or items.
• In the last 12 months, travel has been particularly important for those aged 50+: half (52%) travelled to somewhere they'd previously been for holiday and a quarter (23%) visited a new country.
• Two-thirds (65%) of those aged 50+ say travelling to a new country brings them a great deal of happiness, and six in ten (59%) people aged 25-34 say the same.

Take LV='s interactive 'Surround Yourself' quiz and see how you compare with the rest of the country in experiences vs things!
