Roast dinner burger at Roast

Gourmet Girls starts 2017 with a bang with an indulgent review from Roast in Borough. Roast is famously known for its- well, roasts, complete with oversized Yorkshire puddings, tender cuts of beef and lamb smothered in gravy and veg cooked to perfection. This time we weren’t here for a traditional roast, but rather the inventive new roast dinner burger. An interesting concept that I was eager to try.

Arriving at Roast, the settings felt very luxe-casual. The view over Borough Market and up to the Shard was coupled with a nice glass of champagne on arrival. Nibbling through the selection of bread on the table, my guest and I decided on starters. We ordered scallops with salsify, blood orange and brown shrimp and baked charcoal cheddar soufflé with oyster mushrooms and chives. Although appearing an interesting shape and colour, my guest thoroughly enjoyed the taste and light texture of her baked charcoal cheddar soufflé. My scallops and prawns were cooked to perfection- again, very light, almost airy and full of flavour.

Next came the main presentation of the evening- the burger.

It arrived in all its glory on a rustic wooden board with a small pan of red wine onion gravy to accompany. A large knife was placed in the middle of the burger to allow us to half it and eat in in sections, as it was rather large. The burger was stacked with Welsh Black roast beef, with lashings of carrot piccalilli and horseradish sour cream. It was also topped with melted ale and mustard cheddar, curly kale and pickled red cabbage, all sandwiched between a roast potato, rosemary and garlic bun.

Pouring the gravy onto the roast mountain, it leaked onto the burger, off the wooden board and created a mini river onto the pristine white tablecloth. I hoped I wasn’t the first to do that, but I was equally as embarrassed, and had to stop it flowing with my napkin. When all was cleaned up, I took my first bite of the burger- the flavours were immense. The beef was tender, the kale had a lovely flavour, the bun had the right mix of rosemary, salt and potato. The mustard was a tad spicy- some others would probably love, but unfortunately my palette is weak with spice. Nevertheless, it still made for good extra taste.

We also ordered cheese and truffle chips to complement our main, which we dipped in the red wine onion gravy and devoured quickly. We also had  bottle of light white wine to share, recommended to us by staff.

We both weren’t able to get through the entire burger, but we gave it our best shot. By the end, our buns had become a bit saturated with gravy too, so we threw the towel in on savoury dishes. In conclusion, we decided the taste was exceptional, although there could be some structural and practical revisions to the burgers.

Finishing with warm chocolate pudding with stout ice cream and chocolate crumb (and a sticky date pudding with toffee sauce, almond brittle and clotted cream, because we wanted to try a variety), we were past full. The staff were friendly, the service was great, and the food was exceptionally tasty. I’d love to return to try one of their roast specialities.
