Doctor Foster

A new series hits the ground at a mad sprint

Written by Ben Felsenburg

‘I probably should. But I won’t,’ proclaims Suranne Jones as Gemma, the title character in the returning Doctor Foster (Tuesday, BBC1, 9pm) at a pivotal point inBen-Felsenburg-colour-176 a story that begins at a fever pitch of utterly compelling hysteria and only moves up from there. Her words are a succinct mantra for a woman who was betrayed as badly as anyone can be by their lover and is now understandably consumed by a craving for justice and vengeance – to the point of madness and self-destruction.

Two years on from the events of the last series, her ex-husband Simon has moved back to sleepy Parminster with Kate, the woman he was carrying on with behind her back. Their new house is the size of half the county, so there’s room for Tom, the 15-year-old son Gemma is determined to hang on to. As Simon (Bertie Carvel) positively oozes menace and Machiavellian design (there are moments when even Beelzebub might be shouting ‘Steady on fella!’ at the screen), you feel sure there’s far more to his plans than meets the eye. But then the same goes for Gemma – plotting feverishly to exact a fitting retribution, her eyes burning black coals of hatred, she’s a Valkyrie on steroids who could do anything to anyone at any time.

She’s also still a practising GP and you do wonder about the wellbeing of her patients. But Gemma’s loss is our gain: writer Mike Bartlett has crafted a sequel that’s every bit as gripping as the first time around.
