Dragons’ Den

The new series of Dragons’ Den piles on the hype

Written by Ben Felsenburg
What has happened to Dragons’ Den (Sunday, BBC2, 8pm)? I’m not knocking it, mind you, but I remember the series starting out as a relatively sober-minded platform for budding entrepreneurs to present their ideas for due consideration and possible funding by a panel of wealthy business people. Now it seems to have turned into an epic superhero saga. As flames worthy of the myths of gods erupt from the credits, that lanky overgrown schoolboy Peter Jones is billed as the heroic technology titan. Deborah Meaden – a world-class exponent of headshaking disbelief – has been given the faintly sinister tag of serial investor, and Touker Suleyman is titled not ‘Who he?’ but Fashion Retail Tycoon. To their ranks are added newcomers Jenny Campbell, Cashpoint Queen – she has a no-nonsense way with words and sold her business for a mere £50m – and supplement supremo Tej Lalvani, who has made a healthy fortune in vitamins.

Taking a break from the dour duties of newsnight, presenter Evan Davis is the token human being whose sense of humour provides the vital sweetener. The hopefuls line up as nervously as Christians before a rendezvous with the lions in a Roman amphitheatre. In the opening episode we learn: greed is not always good, make sure you’ve got things all square with the taxman and – most important of all – never, ever dare call Deborah ‘Debbie’. You have been warned.

THE STATE (Sunday, Channel 4, 9pm)
