Line of Duty

Will the devious DCI escape unscathed?

Written by Ben Felsenburg

Nine lives? Cats are positively fragile compared to DCI Roz Huntley (Thandie Newton) in Line Of Duty (Sunday, BBC1, 9pm). She’s managed to overcome every hurdle, from the Ben-Felsenburg-colour-176relentless investigations of the bent-copper-busters in the AC-12 squad to a mortal wound that would surely have killed a lesser being. Now, here we are at the final episode of the series, and a denouement that could go one of two ways. Will there be a long-awaited comeuppance for a villainess who may win full marks for conniving quick-footed scheming but gets a zero for the kind of moral compass that has put a succession of innocent patsies behind bars to save her skin?

Or could Huntley pull it off again, with a little help from the deeply slimy Assistant Chief Constable Hilton, and force us all to endure a cruel long wait until next year’s follow-up series for matters to be resolved? Fighting a lonely battle for the truth as they seek out the killer of forensics boffin Tim Ifield, AC-12 are up against it it as never before: Arnott (Martin Compston) confined to a wheelchair, Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) accused of corruption and Fleming (Vicky McClure) still reeling from having her cover blown. But the real hero is writer Jed Mercurio, who despite the veneer of police jargon gives not a fig for realism with every earth-shattering plot twist, yet has a deep understanding of how to concoct a compelling and addictive story. John Buchan would have been proud.
