Apple Tree Yard

Sunday night drama that will have you hooked

Written by Ben Felsenburg

She is one of the country’s leading genetic experts, a woman so smart she is called to give evidence to a committee of MPs. Afterwards as she saunters through the Palace ofBen-Felsenburg-colour-176 Westminster, a handsome fellow with jet-black hair and beguiling inky eyes invites her to inspect the cupboard where Emily Davidson hid herself away so that in the census of 1911 she could write her address as ‘the House of Commons’. And it is there, before a plaque devoted to the suffragette, that this nameless stranger launches into a kiss. At which point, just minutes into the opening episode of Apple Tree Yard (Sunday, BBC1, 9pm), you might think that Dr Yvonne Carmichael (Emily Watson) would respond: ‘not so fast buster! Do you really think this is the way to treat a woman, here in this hallowed shrine of feminism?’

But instead the irony goes entirely unremarked upon and she responds with greedy passion, though you can understand just why when dishy Ben Chaplin is the mysterious man. Of course a married woman can’t embark upon an affair without there being consequences – at least in the world of drama – and there is indeed a great big paella of trouble ahead in this four-part adaptation of the thriller by Louise Doughty.

There’s a riveting storyline, brilliant acting especially from Watson and – although truth be told you can file the series under the higher sort of tosh – altogether it’s a potboiler that will have you coming back demanding to know what happens next.
