The classic British shoes to take you into autumn/winter

Written by Bicester Village
As Coco Chanel once said, "Fashion passes, style remains" and this is certainly true of footwear. These British classics have endured for centuries and now form the basis of any stylish 'shoe-drobe'.

The Brogue
Once worn by Irish and Scottish farmers as the perforations allowed water to drain away in boggy countryside, brogues are now more likely to be spotted in business meetings and social gatherings than fields.

How to wear it: Black, brown or tan may be the classic but there are plenty of contemporary takes if you want to have a bit more fun with your footwear. Slightly wedged soles and a coloured upper is a big look for both men and women this season. Wear in nudes and pastels with a cropped trouser or rolled-up jean while the last of the summer sun remains, or choose navy, olive or grey suede for cooler days.

The Chelsea Boot
First designed by Queen Victoria's cobbler for walking and riding, this slip-on ankle boot has been worn by bands including The Beatles and the Rolling Stones and is a firm casual favourite.

How to wear it: Black, brown, flat or with a Cuban heel, the classic Chelsea boot adds a subtle rock and roll edge to an outfit and works particularly well with a skinny jean. For a 2017 twist, choose a pointed toe and luxe fabric such as a rich berry-hued velvet or keep it subtle with autumnal shades of suede.

The velvet slipper
Nothing says decadence like a velvet slipper. Once the preserve of pipe-smoking gentlemen and Prince Albert, velvet slippers have left the drawing room and can now be seen walking the red carpet.

How to wear it: Perfect for formal parties and cosy afternoons by the open fire of a local pub, Kanye West wears his slippers sockless with a suit or dressed down with a blazer and jeans. Slippers tend to come in jewel tones of emerald, navy and plum but if you're feeling brave, bright red will add a shock of colour to a black-and-white outfit. Tassels, fringes or an embroidered motif can also add interest, Alexa Chung sports a golden palm tree on her emerald slippers.
