Putting Vintage Hair To The Test In The New Ford Mustang Convertible

Written by Annette Kellow

Theres nothing quite like the summer breeze when driving along an open country road. It's even better if you put the top down, enjoy the fresh air but of course, no one wants to ruin the hair! So what to do?

Recently I had the pleasure of visiting the official Ford Centre in Basildon to view the new Ford GT Mustang and with the help of a wind chamber decided to put three hairstyles to the test to see which one was the best.

The Ford centre is tucked away in rolling green fields in Essex and on arrival I gasped at the sheer size of it- it really is like a small town, albeit a Ford one!

The security guard directed us to our friendly client manager Gemma who took us to the weather chamber. If I'm honest I had never seen a weather chamber before so my knowledge was slim (although I'd had a Google beforehand and knew it involved a lot of wind!)

There we discovered the new Ford GT Mustang with the top already down.

My only other experience of Ford cars was driving a vintage Mustang in America and I have to say it is quite the affair. For starters, people at the lights kept giving me the thumbs up for no particular reason and in the street people would ask questions like '1967 or 68?' (I was never quite sure so would just smile and wave).

It is no surprise then that last year Ford Mustang became the best selling sports car in the world on the Markit Global Automotive Data.

Part of the appeal of Mustang over the years has been the way it combines style, performance and everyday usability thanks to its four-seat cabin and sizeable boot.

I was excited to try some very vintage hairstyles, with a little help from the weather chamber of course.

I wanted to emulate classic elegant looks and love the 1950's so tried to keep on par with this era.

My first style was a classic soft wave accompanied by a 1950's side fringe, vintage headscarf and cat-eye glasses.

They turned the wind up to 20 miles per hour but it was a little tame so they went up to 40. Whoosh! My scarf nearly blew away and we were all in fits as I tried to catch it.

Next was a classic ponytail, which of course can be high or low depending on preference. I would say this was not the most resilient for wind as it literally blew everywhere including my eyes and I couldn't see a thing (cue everyone laughing at me again).

Lastly, a bun or side chignon was very apt as it stayed firmly in place without much movement. The result? A good combination of the chignon with the scarf and glasses for double protection!

I was interested to hear that the Mustang has over 100 fan clubs worldwide and is now the newest member of a very exclusive club – vehicles in continuous production for 50 years. The car has a worldwide base of fans, including more than 7.6 million on Facebook – the most of any vehicle nameplate.

I am now enticed to follow Ford further and being a fan of vintage cars, I believe Ford to be a classic car in a modern world. My favourite part at the day was being driven through the centre to reach our car. We of course had to stop and take a few photos in the Mustang but it started to rain.

'Glamour never takes a holiday!' exclaimed the photographer, Arabella Packford which of course sent us into more absolute fits as we tried to do selfies in the downpour.
