Skincare 101: Serums

Serums have been having a bit of a moment recently but you could be forgiven for not having a clue what they are or what they are supposed to do, says Amy Cosgrove

Written by Amy Cosgrove
Serums are designed to provide a powerful hit of high quality ingredients to tackle a particular skincare concern. For this reason they can be a really effective way of delivering change to your skin quickly.

The molecules that the serum is made of are smaller than in a traditional moisturiser so in theory the product can penetrate deeper into the skin. In comparison, a moisturiser is designed to lock in moisture and form a protective layer, so think of your serum as your dress and your moisturiser as your coat. Yes, your moisturiser can do the job its own but it isn't designed to work miracles and a serum will do a much better job of targeting a specific issue.

Serums tend to be one of the more expensive skincare products on the market; this is due to the high concentrations of quality ingredients. If you are looking at where to spend the most money in your routine, the answer is always serums. Although it might seem like a lot to spend, you need to use a lot less product than a traditional moisturiser so a little really can go a long way. In consistency they are generally very light so sink into the skin fast, this makes them excellent for layering moisture and will not interfere with your make up like an oil.

You will find serums that cater for every skin concern from dehydration to acne and wrinkles. It is also completely fine to use more than one at a time, or use one AM and one PM which is what I tend to do. For instance I will use an antioxidant serum to protect my skin in the morning and a moisturising serum such as hydraluron in the evening.

Take a look below at my top recommendations for common skincare concerns.
