Cornish Beef with Cream

Aidan Turner returns as the moody man in black

Written by Ben Felsenburg
Surely every man must think, ‘Oh to be Ross Poldark.’ After all the turbulent drama and tragedy of last year’s series, still he has emerged more or less unscathed.

Now, Poldark (BBC One, Sunday, 9pm) returns with his locks more raven and his body more ripped than ever before, leaving a trail of swooning ladies in his wake wherever he goes. But there’s a grim prospect in store for the hard-bitten hero of Winston Graham’s novels. Dastardly George Warleggan has cooked up a cunning plan to do away with his arch-enemy forever, and so Poldark (Aidan Turner) stands accused of leading a gang of wreckers to plunder from the beach – a capital crime.

It’s all a fit-up of course, but even with the forces of the gentry and the law ranged against him the superstar of the scythe doesn’t rattle easy. We’ve seen his sangfroid before, but never quite like this, for the prospect of the noose hardly stirs this most stoic of souls. ‘They can’t hang me – I’ve too much to do,’ is his plain response.

With the anticipation of an upcoming trial at Bodmin Assizes, and what promises to be an unmissable legal show, you might fear the consequences of such hubris. But before we worry ourselves into a premature outpouring of grief, note that there are 10 episodes in this series, all bearing the name of our hero. I have a feeling that this peerless pin-up won’t be going anywhere in a hurry for quite a while.
