Season after season we have seen lace as a prominent trend on the catwalks with designers such as Dolce and Gabbana and Ralph Lauren making good use of the delicate fabric. There is something very elegant and pretty about lace which is why it has stood the test of time. Reminiscent of the Royals, the trend dates back to Queen Elizabeth where lace collars, ruffles, caps and shawls were all the rage during the 17th century.

Today lace is a great fabric as its versatility means that you can create a variety of looks that encompass pretty, flirty, romantic chic and lady like charm. However there is a fine line between right and wrong! So, here are my top tips for wearing delicate lace without looking like a runaway bride...

Try to use lace as an accessory Lace accessories are great as they add a delicate touch to your outfit and you can dress it up with scarves and wraps. Sweet lace collars are useful as they can make ordinary tops look dressier. This mink lace scarf from Mint Velvet will complement a multitude of outfits for summer and would make an elegant edition to your collection of accessories. £39.00.

Lace Shirts Lace shirts are the easiest way to wear lace and they can be worn in so many different ways. A thin airy lace top is great for the summer and will keep you cool. This Ivory Wrap Lace Top from Debenhams is a great all rounder and will make a fabulous edition to your wardrobe. £45.00.

Lace shirt

Try tucking in your lace shirt into a bright colourful waist clinching skirt, for a playful summer look. This striking rose pink skirt from Hobbs would look stunning with a delicate white lace top and a pair of flats. £99.00.

Or you can opt to keep it classic by pairing a white lace shirt with a great pair of shorts, for a preppy look. Keep things simple with this navy blue high-waisted pin up shorts from Urban Outfitters. £35.00.

Lace dresses Wearing a snow white lace dress is most likely to make you look like you’ve just arrived from your wedding so try to go for a piece with an edge. This pretty lace skater dress from ASOS with a scoop neckline and sheer sleeves can give you the chic feminine edge you’re looking for. RRP £35.00.  If you do want to go for a more classic lace dress and you’ve got the cash to splash then try out this lovely off-white Electra dress from Project D. £405.00.

Or for a cheaper alternative opt for this lovely Fast Twinkle lace dress from French Connection. £110.00  However if opting for pieces like these then always aim to accessorise! A belt at the waist can help define those curves. Or go for bold statement jewellery that adds a touch of cool to your outfit. Colourful shoes can also do the trick and look very trendy at the same time. Lace Skirts Skirts are another great way to wear lace through all the seasons. This laced pencil skirt by Mango with its intricate detail is perfect for the boardroom or an elegant dinner party £60.00.
